What Size DIY Wet/Dry Filter for 75gal Tank?

I’m constructing a Wet/Dry Trickle Filter for my 75gal reef tank (Soon to be) and I’d like to know what kind of tank to use for it? Would 20gallons be good? On youtube somebody used 30gal for 90 and it worked well, so I’m wondering if 20gal would be ok for a 75gal tank. Also in a Refugium is it better to use sand or mud? What are the advantages and disadvantages?
